Standard 2
Students complete a questionnaire at the beginning of each semester that gives me background information about them in which I can use to create lesson plans that include what they are interested in.
Most of the assignments and activities I create allow students to have choices to complete it based on what they are interested in. I have found this to be helpful because students cannot say that the assignment is boring if they chose what they are doing.
Ms. Thomas visited my class as a guest speaker in the Spring of 2014. She spoke with students about the different types of leaders and leadership. This gave my students an idea of what type of leader they were and application of real world examples of how they can be effective leaders in school and outside of school.
Give students an opportunity to make a choice on an occasional quiz.

Give students an opportunity to make a choice on an occasional quiz.
- Students are not informed ahead of time if the option would be available or not.
- I want them to study their notes before the quiz.
- I also want them to look over the quiz before we begin to ask any questions they have before we begin.
- After the students work on the quiz for about 10 minutes, I give them the option of using their notes for 5 minutes with a 5 point deduction from the overall grade.
- One student thought that 5 minutes would be too long and suggested 3 minutes for a 3 point deduction. Other students agreed and about one third of the class chose to use their notes for 3 minutes vs 5 minutes.
- Overall grades for the class are usually good when I offer this option. All grades are usually above a 70 with most students’ grades being in the high B or A range.
- This is a popular option that I put in place to help all students.
- I have found that students who do not test well are always prepared just in case I offer this on a test or quiz.
